I still miss iTunes smart playlists
As great as Spotify has been, I have particular ways that I like to approach my music listening, and Spotify has never really delivered for me the way iTunes Smart Playlists did. I want rule-based playlists that work off of each other to get me the right balance of discovering new music, exploring my existing library, and spending time with my favorites, without ever getting burned out.

So I made my own version
Following the lead of the fantastic Smarter Playlists, I set out to make my own version of Smart Playlists for Spotify using their APIs. It’s up and running as we speak. Playlists are creatable with the same kind of conditions and nesting conditions available in iTunes. Play Counts and Last Played are tracked by the app (since Spotify doesn’t expose this data to users), and playlists Live update as you listen.

A note on security
This is a straight up vibe coded app. I’ve done my best to ensure security, but please know that there’s a good amount of “use at your own risk” here. The best I can offer is that I’m using it daily, so I’m taking your data privacy as seriously as I’m taking my own. Your account will be accessed through your Spotify login, the app will only store Spotify OAuth tokens, no additional passwords or anything like that.
I don’t plan on accessing your data outside of general usage (how many playlists are being made, how often is the site being visited, etc.). As part of beta testing I may ask for your permission to look into your play history for debugging, but I don’t plan to view your data beyond that, and will alert you if any breaches occur.
Hopefully it’s also clear that I’m in no way affiliated with Spotify, outside of having a developer account.
